Exhibitions and Installations
19 June - 4 JulyHelsinki Horizon 2030 launches a vivid Urban Pilot project and opens doors to Helsinki World Design Capital in 2012.
Helsinki is going through a major process of renewal as former industrial and harbour areas are being transformed for new uses. The completion of the new harbour at Vuosaari has liberated the largest amount of space in a hundred years for constructing new housing and workplaces in the city. Over the next decades the city will have a major task with central importance for the urban structure as new areas are planned and built.
According to Aristotle, a city exists not just for the sake of living, but for living well. This is what Helsinki is aiming to achieve – the good life! Around 20 kilometres of new public shoreline will be liberated for use by all of the city’s residents. This represents a significant addition to the shoreline paths that circle the peninsula. How will this improve the quality of life for residents, and what opportunities will it create for everyday life and enjoying the moment? The exhibition “Helsinki Horizon 2030” provides answers to these and other questions.
The exhibition is designed to be displayed in a sea container. A container fits the spirit of showcasing the former harbor areas and its logistics are practical to handle.
The exhibition display consists of the following parts:
• Large aerial view of the entire city of Helsinki. The printed image extends from the floor onto the walls and ceiling and summons up the development plans of the city, the project areas are outlined on the map to indicate their locations.
• Scale models of the districts of Länsisatama, Kalasatama, and Kruunuvuorenranta. The models are placed on top of the aerial view in the points of actual geographical locations of the areas.
• Audiovisual presentation, screened with 4 display units 42". A stream of urban symphony combining sound and images. Photographs, glimpses of history, videos, and new 3D-models and renderings are compiled to present the architecture and plans of the project areas with a vivid rhythm.
The exhibition is produced by Helsinki City Planning Department.
