Thames Path to Thames Gateway Cycle Tour

Walks, Cycles and Tours
26 June
10:00 - 18:00

Hosted by: van Heyningen and Haward Architects
van Heyningen and Haward, in partnership with Southwark Cyclists, are hosting a Thames Path cycle ride as part of the London Festival of Architecture week of events.

We will meet at 9.45 for 10am departure from the Southwark Needle (South side of London Bridge) for our easy paced, all day, much stopping, exploring ride along the Thames Path.

The route will take us through Rotherhithe to Deptford Dockyard and Greenwich's World Heritage Site, round the perimeter of the O2, past the Thames Flood Barrier, to Woolwich Dockyard then Woolwich Arsenal. As we take a trip over the Woolwich Free Ferry, we pass the Royal Docks and London City Airport, before we take a lunch break at Barking Riverside, the site of the emerging 10,000 home eco town and vHH’s new school and Neighbourhood Centre. Barking Riverside Ltd have generously allowed us to use their office for lunch stop and WC’s. Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring a packed lunch with you. We will then continue along to the RSPB bird reserve at Rainham Marshes for tea at vHH's Environment and Education Visitor Centre. Our return journey brings us back to Tower Bridge along the bike lanes of the A13 via the Lea Crossing, North Barrier Park and the Wapping Ornamental Canals.

There is of course the option of a relaxing post-cycle de-brief in a riverside pub for those who would like.

The ride is just over 40 miles in all, with lots of train stations en route and at the halfway stage for those who don't want to do the whole ride. The ride is suitable for all types of bike, is not a race and could be described as “paced for all but not so slow as to get nowhere”.
